Skin Toners, Freshners and Astringents
Intended to "freshen and cleanse" skin and "shrink" pores, these types of cosmetics do little more than make your face feel cool, tight, and tingly. All three types are basically composed of water, alcohol and fragnances. Interestingly, colognes and perfumes share the same basic water, alcohol and fragrance formula. However, colognes and perfumes contain less alcohol and more fragrance.
For naturally dry, sensitive skin or for people being treated with drying, antiacne medications, astringents can be irritating, particularly if used during the winter months. Even for people with oily skin, a soap and water cleansing is all that is usually necessary. The addition of which hazel, menthol, or camphor to these products may add a tingly sensation but little else. For fragrance, mint, eucalyptus and lemon may be added, but these confer no special properties. Some people with excessively oily skin, especially during hot, humid weather, may find astringents helpful for blotting up oiliness. But even under those circumstances, astringents should be used infrequently because they tend to over dry and irritate.
